The author, Aston Courtois (21 November 1897 – 23 September 1970) was a French Roman Catholic priest and member of the Congregation of the Sons of Charity. Author, publisher, journalist, director general of the Union of Catholic Works of France, he is the co-founder of the Cœurs Vaillants-Âmes Vaillantes movement and the International Catholic Bureau for Children.
From his youth, Gaston Courtois acted in favour of children, particularly through patronages3.
In 1929, he participated in the creation of the newspaper Cœurs Vaillants with Abbés Gabriel Bard and Pierre Rougement (Abbé Henri Guesdon), within the Union of Catholic Works of France. This periodical is intended for boys aged 8 to 15. Gaston Courtois was nicknamed Jacques Coeur4. This creation was followed by the founding of the Catholic movement Cœurs vaillants-Âmes vaillantes, in 1936, and then its female counterpart, the Âmes Vaillantes, in 1937. The Valiant Hearts-Valiant Souls are currently known as Catholic Action for Children. The movement was at the origin of many periodicals and publications, including the weekly Vaillance, created with Marcel Job in 1940 in Lyon, and which appeared until 1944.
