The Church Considered in Herself

Let us pray dearly beloved for the Holy Church of God, that our God and Lord may be pleased to give Her peace, keep Her in unity, and preserve Her throughout the whole world, subjecting to Her principalities and powers: and grant us, living in peace and tranquillity, to glorify God the Father Almighty.

Here we consider:

1.       The Church’s Nature;

2.       Her End and Means (for Attaining the End);

3.       Her Constitution;

4.       Her Properties;

5.       Her Necessity.

To appreciate what Pius XII calls the ‘excellence’ of this name and what precisely the Council passes over in silence, we here undertake to expound the doctrine in somewhat greater depth, together with that part of it which is the Church Militant, as well as the place in the next world reserved for those excluded from the Mystical Body, which is Hell. We shall in the following consider both the doctrines in themselves and the silence in which they were passed over.
